Album #72 – The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators

Album #72

All I can say about this album is WOW!!!! This is psychedelic music at it’s finest. The 13th Floor Elevators came from Austin, Texas. They were one of the first groups to describe their music as psychedelic. This album is filled with that. Each song contains a unique sound: an electric jug. That sound is heard on every track on the album and gives it the unique sound. They also mix genres up with garage rock, folk and blues dominating. The album starts off with their most well known song, You’re Gonna Miss Me, which is also featured in the beginning of the film High Fidelity. That song is a pure rocker from start to finish. The album does not let down after that. Each track is slightly different than the other. Splash 1 (Now I’m Home) is very mellow and folksy where as Fire Engine is pure garage rock and Kingdom of Heaven is one of the most trippy and experimental tracks on the album. This album paved the way for psychedelic rock and started, in my opinion, on of the best times for popular music in the late 20th century. Another way of finding out about this music is to check out the Nuggets box sets which feature much of this music. I have to agree with Steven Van Zandt, host of Little Steven’s Underground Garage and member of the E Street Band, when he says that this innovated rock and roll as we know it. He is right. Without this album, where would rock and roll have gone. I am so glad this album was on the list. It was a delight to listen to and it is and album that rocks and blows your mind. I don’t have any other stand out tracks because this album was excellent and you have to listen for yourself!!! Every song was good!!! Overall, I give this album 5 out of 5!!!

Next: John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton!!
