Songs That I Can’t Get Out Of My Head #3 – Holding Back The Years

This song was recorded and released by Simply Red in 1985 on their debut album Picture Book. It did not go anywhere until it was re-released in 1986 and it went straight to #1 on the Billboard chart. This song is blue-eyed soul in all of its glory. Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice. The song is so mellow yet so outer worldly and almost could have been a hit in the 60’s or 70’s but it belongs in the 80’s. The song features a great muted trumpet solo and it adds a jazz flavor to the song. It is a perfect song for a quiet Sunday afternoon. The song is in stark contrast to their first single which was much more political. Simply Red was best at love songs. The song has not really been covered by anyone and even if it was, it is hard to top the original. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
