Album #173 – Oar

Album #173

This album was a pleasant gem to find. It is one of the best albums I have heard on the list yet!!! “Skip” Spence played with Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape. Spence then ended up in a mental hospital. He wrote the album while there. The album is a bit manic, yet beautiful. Weighted Down (The Prison Song) is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It literally made me cry. The lyrics are so beautiful and well written that, dare I say, he is better than Dylan was at that time. Grey/Afro features the “flanging” effect throughout. That effect was introduced in the Small Faces’ song Itchycoo Park and was widely used on many albums and songs afterwards. Grey/Afro uses the effect on the whole song and it creates a unique sound. The best way to describe Alexander “Skip” Spence is that he is a cross between Donovan, Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. I recommend this album to anybody who likes those artists. His music is unique yet beautiful and I was so glad this album was on the list. It is a perfect mellow album and touches on all emotions. I would never have been able to discover this album had it not been on the list. Overall, I give this album 5.5 out of 5.

Next: The final album of the 1960’s, Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
