Album #358 – Africa Brasil
Jorge Ben’s Africa Brasil was different than I thought it was going to be. The Brazilian music I have listened to on the list so far (Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil) came from the Tropicalia movement. It was very traditional in nature and nothing like North American popular music. Africa Brasil was different. The musical sounds on this album are very funky and mirror disco. Hell, even Rod Stewart was inspired by this album. The melody of the chorus on “Do You Think I’m Sexy” borrows straight from a melody in the song Taj Mahal. In fact, Jorge Ben sued Stewart for copyright infringement. Even though I couldn’t understand what Jorge Ben was saying, the songs were very catchy. You can dance to most of these songs and some of the melodies are sung without words, using de de de’s and da da da’s instead. I really enjoyed Africa Brasil and I will be adding it to my collection. This album fuses Brazilian, African and American sounds perfectly. Overall, I give Africa Brasil, 4 out of 5.
