Album #375 – Hard Again

Album #375

The Legendary Muddy Waters had a come back with this album in 1977. Produced by Johnny Winter, the album was released on Winter’s Blue Sky label. It features Waters along with Winters and his backing band that includes: Pinetop Perkins, longtime guitarist Bob Margolin, James Cotton and Big Eyes Smith. Hard Again is pure fun, You can hear bits of studio dialogue at the beginnings and ends of the tracks, showing that this album was cut live on the floor. Hard Again’s centerpiece is a reworking of Water’s classic song, Mannish Boy. You can tell by the energy on that track that everyone is having a ball. Sometimes, the best records are created when there is no pressure and lots of fun to be had. That atmosphere shines through. I really enjoyed this album. It was fun to listen to and the electric blues style that Waters diverted to for this album is a good adjustment. Other highlights include: I Want to Be Loved, The Blues Had A Baby and They Named It Rock and Roll, Crosseyed Cat and Little Girl. Overall, I give Hard Again, 4.5 out of 5.
