Album #379 – Aja

Album #379

Aja is arguably Steely Dan’s most known album and best selling album. Featuring the hits Peg, Josie and Deacon Blues, this album is a jazz-rock masterpiece. Instead of assembling a band, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker decided to use session musicians on each track. They chose different musicians for every song and as a result, the credits list is a who’s who of jazz and rock session musicians. But, Fagen and Becker are still at the heart of this album. The lyrics are ironic and done in a way that only Becker and Fagen could do. And yet, each song is smooth, laid back and accessible. Sadly, I do not have Aja in my collection but, after a listen on a sunny afternoon, I have decided that this album is worth all the hype. This album is perfect to listen to on a lazy, sunny Sunday afternoon. Other highlights include: Black Cow, Aja and Home at Last. Overall, I give Aja, 5 out of 5.
