Album #408 – Real Life

Album #408

Magazine is one of those punk/new wave bands that most people don’t know about unless they lived through that time. Magazine are one the first new wave bands on this list. Fronted by Howard Devoto, Magazine truly embodied the style of music that would become commonplace in the early 80’s. I enjoyed this album because it was different from much of the punk bands I had listened to thus far. More melodic, less angry and heavy. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It’s just a nice change of pace. Devoto’s voice is very unique and is equal parts Peter Murphy/Ferghal Sharkey/John Lydon/David Sylvian. Devoto was actually a founding member of the Buzzcocks before leaving to form Magazine. As for the music, the band relies on synths along with guitar, bass and drums. This will definitely be an album that I will add to my collection. Overall, I give Real Life, 4 out of 5.

Next: Darkness On The Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen!!!
