Album #427 – Highway to Hell

Album #427

Highway to Hell was AC/DC’s last studio album with front man and lead singer Bon Scott before his untimely death in 1980. It is also the first album from 1979 on the list which means I am 26 albums away from the 1980’s!!! And, what an album to kick off 1979. Highway to Hell is one of the best rock albums I have ever heard. It is fun, energetic, exciting and the way rock and roll should be. There are those who say that many of AC/DC’s songs sound the same. That may be true but I can’t name too many other bands of their caliber who have fun and show that in their playing. AC/DC’s sound is a combination of hard rock and blues. Their music, especially the tracks on this album, have a swing to them. Maybe that has to do with the way lead guitarist Angus Young moves on stage. Highway to Hell also marks the group’s first album produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange. His production adds to the band’s sound, making it more full compared to their previous albums. But, unlike Lange’s other productions, Highway to Hell does not sound flashy or overproduced. This probably has to do with the integrity of the group. The music comes first and AC/DC are all about having a good time. That is why they have remained one of THE best hard rock bands of all time. They continue to sell out shows and turn younger generations on to rock and roll. Not bad for a band that has had two front men.  Highlights include: Highway to Hell, Girls Got Rhythm, Shot Down In Flames, If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It), Love Hungry Man and Night Prowler. Overall, I give Highway to Hell, 5 out of 5.
